Waltz
For Debbie introduces to American
listening audiences one of the best jazz
singers to be heard in some years. Chris
McNulty, a native of Australia, is well known in that country,
having led groups, toured and done recording work there for most
of her career.
Chris
possesses a rich, full voice, of which she is in total control. She
is a great interpreter of Iyrics and she swings. For her first U.S.
recording, she has chosen a stellar, sympathetic group of musicians
and an enticing, seductive selection of musical vehicles.
Kenny
Washington and George Mraz are (or should be) quite well known. Both
areamong the very best at what they do. Pianist Paul McNamara is
Australian, and an old friend of Chris's. He has worked with manyvisiting
American artists, including Milt Jackson and Joe Henderson. Paul
came to New York to do the date with Chris. The great tenor saxophone
solo on "The Song Is You" is rising young New York Tenor
Jed Levy.
All in
all, Waltz For Debbie is a brilliant recording, and an impressive
debut of a voice from which much more will be heard.
